Date A Girl Who Reads
 

Date a girl who reads. Date a girl who spends her money on books instead of clothes. She has problems with closet space because she has too many books. Date a girl who has a list of books she wants to read, who has had a library card since she was twelve.

Find a girl who reads. You’ll know that she does because she will always have an unread book in her bag.She’s the one lovingly looking over the shelves in the bookstore, the one who quietly cries out when she finds the book she wants. You see the weird chick sniffing the pages of an old book in a second hand book shop? That’s the reader. They can never resist smelling the pages, especially when they are yellow.

She’s the girl reading while waiting in that coffee shop down the street. If you take a peek at her mug, the non-dairy creamer is floating on top because she’s kind of engrossed already. Lost in a world of the author’s making. Sit down. She might give you a glare, as most girls who read do not like to be interrupted. Ask her if she likes the book. 

Buy her another cup of coffee. 

Let her know what you really think of Murakami. See if she got through the first chapter of Fellowship. Understand that if she says she understood James Joyce’s Ulysses she’s just saying that to sound intelligent. Ask her if she loves Alice or she would like to be Alice. 

It’s easy to date a girl who reads. Give her books for her birthday, for Christmas and for anniversaries. Give her the gift of words, in poetry, in song. Give her Neruda, Pound, Sexton, Cummings. Let her know that you understand that words are love. Understand that she knows the difference between books and reality but by god, she’s going to try to make her life a little like her favorite book. It will never be your fault if she does. 

She has to give it a shot somehow. 

Lie to her. If she understands syntax, she will understand your need to lie. Behind words are other things: motivation, value, nuance, dialogue. It will not be the end of the world. 

Fail her. Because a girl who reads knows that failure always leads up to the climax. Because girls who understand that all things will come to end. That you can always write a sequel. That you can begin again and again and still be the hero. That life is meant to have a villain or two. 

Why be frightened of everything that you are not? Girls who read understand that people, like characters, develop. Except in the Twilight series. 

If you find a girl who reads, keep her close. When you find her up at 2 AM clutching a book to her chest and weeping, make her a cup of tea and hold her. You may lose her for a couple of hours but she will always come back to you. She’ll talk as if the characters in the book are real, because for a while, they always are. 

You will propose on a hot air balloon. Or during a rock concert. Or very casually next time she’s sick. Over Skype. 

You will smile so hard you will wonder why your heart hasn’t burst and bled out all over your chest yet. You will write the story of your lives, have kids with strange names and even stranger tastes. She will introduce your children to the Cat in the Hat and Aslan, maybe in the same day. You will walk the winters of your old age together and she will recite Keats under her breath while you shake the snow off your boots. 

Date a girl who reads because you deserve it. You deserve a girl who can give you the most colorful life imaginable. If you can only give her monotony, and stale hours and half-baked proposals, then you’re better off alone. If you want the world and the worlds beyond it, date a girl who reads. 

Or better yet, date a girl who writes.

Book #12: Jane Eyre
Finished: March 20, 2011

I have this app on my itouch that let's me listen to free autiobooks. Of course there're all old classic books, so you won't find Twilight or Harry Potter on it's list. I don't really know why I started reading/ listening to Jane Eyre. I guess it's because I was going to read it for school but I changed my mind. So when I saw it on the list of books on this app I picked it. I also down loaded the free ebook on to my iPod so I could listen and read it at the same time. 

Jane Eyre Summary: Jane Eyre by Charlotte Bronte is about the life of a girl named Jane. She was an orphan her whole life and ended up living with her aunt who hated her and forces her to go to a boarding school. When she arrives at the boarding school every thing changes..

My favorite things about the book: I really loved this book. It was mysterious, full of adventure and love, and all about finding who you are. It was great. I loved Jane, and Mr. Rochester. And I love the time period it was writen.  Books aren't written like that anymore, it was beautiful. Listening to it on autiobook was great because at some points they spoke french. It was a fantastic love and life story and I loved it. 

Some things I didn't like about the book: the only things I didn't like about this book was that the chapters were sometimes long, and since it was written in the 1800's some of the vocabulary they us is hard to understand. But it's not that bad.

Rating: I would give Jane Eyre a 4.8 out of 5 stars

Recommend it?: Yessss :)

This is going to be a short blog today because I have a ton of school work I need to finish! So sorry! 

Book #11: Jessica's Guide to Dating on the Dark Side 
Finished: March 10, 2011

I read Jessica's Guide to Dating on the Dark Side by Beth Fantaskey for the book club I'm in at my school.

Jessica's Guide to Dating on the Dark Side Summary: This book is about a girl named Jessica who is starting her senior year in high school, only to be stocked by a mysterious stranger, and find out her family has been hiding a huge secret form her... That she is a vampire princess who has an arranged marriage set up for her... with a vampire prince. And if she dies not marry him war in the vampire world will breakout.

My favorite things about the book: I love vampire novels, and I love romance novels. This book include both of those things which was very good. I also love stories with hidden secrets form old family's and things like that. I loved how during the novel Lucius ( the vamp prince Jessica is supposed to marry ) helps her realize how beautiful she really is. That was really sweet. For a second I thought it was going to end badly, but I didn't so that's good. I love happy endings. I loved how Lucius talked during the novel; like he was from the past. And lastly I loved how even though it was from Jessica's point of view we still got to see Lucius's thoughts from his letters he wrote to his uncle.

Some things I didn't like about the book: Hmm... There's not much I didn't like about the book. I didn't like how Jake completely over reacted about what happened. And I also didn't like Faith. Hmm I quess that's all. Overall a good read.

Rating: I would give Jessica's Guide to Dating on the Dark Side a 4.3 out of 5 stars

Recommend it?: Yep, but it's really more of a girly book, just a warning to you guys

I know, I know. I'm very behind in my reading. But that's because I'm in the middle if like 5 books right now so I've been spending more time reading than blogging. Sorry! Anyway really soon I'm going to be done with like five books at the same time, so I'll catch up.

Book #10: Linger
Finished: February 28, 2011

SPOILER ALERT! (For Shiver)

Linger is the second book in the wolves of mercy falls series by maggie stiefvater. The first book in the series is Shiver (remember? From about a month ago). When I start a series and I like the first book than I go on to the next book, thats true with most people.  

Linger Summary: Linger picks up a few months after were shiver ended. Sam is human and no longer changes in to a wolf because of the cold. It's almost spring so Sam, Grace, and Isabella start to meet the new wolves Beck changed. They meet Cole, one of the new wolves, how has very familiar face and hidden secret. Along side of that things are happening to Grace that no one can explain... 

My favorite things about the book: I liked this book better that Shiver, which I know is weird because sequels normally aren't as good as the first book or movie. I think I liked it better because of the new character, Cole. I just loved his back story. Maggie Stiefvater creates great back stories. Cole is the lead singer in this boyband and he hates his life and wgat he stands for so much that he just wants to loss himself. I loved how as the story went on Cole changed who he is and really started to turn his life around. He went from suicides careless teen to... just human. I loved how adorable Grace and Sam are together. I loved how isabella had a bigger part in this book to and how she helps Cole, and how Cole helps her. The book ends with a huge cliffhanger. That's always good. Makes you need to have next book. I love that feeling; needing a book. I also just loved how the book was in green ink. Fantastic ;)

Some things I didn't like about the book:  At the end of Shiver Sam is cured from being a wolf so he goes on dating Grace and all. I didn't like how Grace over reacted to her parents over reaction to when they found Sam in her room at night. No they were not sleeping together, only next to each other and Grace parents got really mad so they grounded her. Sure Grace does have some good points she proves but she did kind of go over board. She should have just taken her punishment. It wasn't that much. Only a weekend. I don't know I would have reacted different. She just needs to chill. The other thing I didn't like was how Cole was a sex/drug/suicidal/ guy, but like I said through out the novel he changes so that's good. Over all a very good book. 

Rating: I would give Linger 4.4 out of 5 stars

Recommend it?: Yes, but again start at the beginning Shiver. Much less confusing that way.

Book #9: Angel
Finished: February 21, 2011

If you haven't read the Maximum Ride series by James Patterson than this blog won't make a lot of sense to you. Just a warning.

I started reading the Maximum Ride series when I was a freshman. One day freshman year I went to one of our school book fairs. At these book fairs most kids would only go to buy cool pens, pencils, and stickers. I was one of the few who actually bought books. So I was looking around and I picked up the first book of the Max series, called The Angel Experiment. On the back cover the first thing that was written there was 'Do not put this book down! Your life may depend on it!'. So I didn't put the book down and I bought it, you know to save my life and all ;)

Maximum Ride Series Summary: these books are about 6 kids who were used as experiments buy mad scientist when they were little. They were all given wings and different powers at the lab, which they call 'The School'. One of the scientist, Jeb, helped them all escape but then disappeared leaving Max, the oldest mutant bird kid in charge. During these seven books Max, Fang, Iggy, Nudge, Gazzy, and Angel have to try to stay alive, stay together, stay away from the schools, and save the world. That's a VERY basic summary of the overall series...

Angel Summary: Angel is the 7th (and second to last) book in the Max series by James Patterson. In this book Fang starts building up his own gang, and Dylan slowly, against Max's better judgment, takes Fangs place in her flock. But both groups find  a huge piece of the puzzle and have to come together and work side by side to stop the end f the world from coming.

My favorite things about the book: This book was the missing link in the story. The whole time they were talking about saving the world, but they didn't know from what. And finally this book told us. So yay for that, it was about time. I like how Angel didn't stab Max in the back again, that was good. I loved the obvious tension, emotions, and angst between Fang and Max. They still love each other. I really just loved how everything finally started make sense. It's going to be hard to wait a year to see how it all ends... Great ending to, really big cliff hanger..

Some things I didn't like about the book: One word. Dylan. He has to stop trying to get Max to love him. It's not going to happen.. at least I hope not. She loves Fang, and just because Fang left doesn't mean they won't get back together in the last book.. I didn't like how Fang and Max were not together. That was hard to read. Other then the whole love square/ triangle thing going on it was really good.

How It All Will End: So really quickly, this is what I think will happen in the last book. They will somehow save the world, Jeb will turn out to be a good guy, and they will all go live/ get adopted by Max's mom. Fang and Max will get back together, and Dylan will get together with Maya (Max II) so this is what I think, Maya and Dylan were made around the same time, 6 months ago. When they programed Dylan to love Max I think they really programed him to love Maya. But they thought Maya was dead but that didn't matter because Maya and Max are almost the same exact person. But Maya's not dead so Dylan and her will be together. I think.. Lets hope... 

Rating: I would give Angel 4.4 out of 5 stars

Recommend it?: Yes, but start at the beginning of the series. Starting with Angel would be very confusing.

Funny Story

The last three books I've read (The Perks of Being a Wallflower, Looking for Alaska, and the color purple) were very depressing. So I was thinking i should tell you blog readers a funny story to, you know, cheer us all up!

One of my favorite book series is the Hunger Game series by Susan Collins (i will defiantly be reading them some time this year, but I wanted to tell this story now). In the first chapter Katniss, the main character, is hunting in the woods and basically describing her life and where she lives. Okay sounds perfectly normal. One problem. I thought she was a boy.

If you own a copy of Hunger Games or can access one easily then I recommend going and reading the first chapter while thinking Katniss is a boy. 

Really I'm not crazy, if you go back and read it them you will see that I wasn't so far off. 

For everyone who thinks i am crazy here is my reasoning.
1. She ties her hair up into a braid. I thought she was like a Native American boy with long hair, kind of like Jacob Black from twilight or whatever
2. She talks about providing for her family by hunting and taking care of them. (gosh I sound sexist haha. Really I'm not. It just felt like that type of book, yah know?)
3. Then she goes of to meet her friend Gale who is also a boy and they hunt, so I thought it was like the boys of the village go of to hunt together 
4. Katniss didn't sound like a girls name :P

Things that made me realize HE was a SHE...
1. She talked about her relationship with Gale and how they didn't like each other romantically ( I just thought Gale was gay at first ha)
2. And the moment I knew she was a girl was when she put on a dress. yep

So maybe I am crazy, who knows. Did anyone else make that same mistake or one like that with any book? Let me know :)

Book #6: Looking for Alaska
Finished: February 2, 2011

Good morning John it's Thursday. 

If you're a fan of the vlogbrothers (Hank Green and John Green) on YouTube than you will know why I started my blog like that. Anyway I've been a fan, and a nerdfighter, for about a year now. This whole time I've been watching the vlogbrothers videos I've heard John talk about his book Looking for Alaska. I didn't read it right away because my school's librarian, who has read everything, told me she didn't like it- at all. And she knows books, and she knows when they're good and when they're bad. So I put off reading it for a little while, but final curiosity got the best of me and I read it. And let me say, its nothing like I thought it would be...

Looking for Alaska Summary: So this book is about a boy named Miles, later known as Pudge, who leaves Florida to go to a boarding school in alabama for his junior year of high school. At this new school he meets Alaska Young, and she changes his life forever...

My favorite thing about the book: There were a lot of things I like about this book. 1. I like thinking "haha that's such a John Green thing to say". 2. I loved Alaska's love for books, and the book and poetry references they used. 3. For the first half of the book they are counting down to something. And I being curious and having no self control looked ahead to see what they were counting down to. I couldn't figure it out. I skimmed and skimmed and skimmed, until I finally gave up and just read. Wow I didn't see this coming. I thought they were counting down to Alaska leaving, and then having Pudge go "looking for her". But no. They were counting down to Alaska's death. Did not see that coming. Congrats John, it takes a lot to pull something over my head like that. 4. I loved Alaska complicated, secret filled life. 5. I loved Pudge's essay at the end and how he figured the way out of the labyrinth.

Some things I didn't like about the book: I didn't like the huge drug, sex, and alcohol uses in the book. The one thing I didn't like about Alaska was her obsession with sex. And there was this one part in the book with Pudge and a girl named Lara that was very discussion and not needed. I mean really John? Why write that into your book, all it did was turn it from a PG-13 book to an R rated book. I can't even write about it here, i feel so dirty. But oh well, what can I do?

Rating: I would give Looking for Alaska 3 out of 5 stars

Recommend it?: Yes I would, to some.. Mature readers.. It really is a good story.

Book #5

Sorry, I know it's been a few days. I finished my 5th book on Saturday and I was planing on writing my blog on Sunday. But on Sunday I got to see my cousin who is home from war so I didn't have time. He's leaving to go back tonight so if your a religious person than pray for him, if not then that's a-okayy. So anyway here is book #5!

Book #5: Heartsinger
Finished: January 29, 2011

Heartsinger by karlijn stoffels is my schools librarians favorite book and she basically forced me to read it. And I'm glad she did.

Heartsinger Summary: This book is about a boy, named Mee, who grew up with to death parents. Mee has this amazing singing voice that could make anyone happy, except his parents, because they are death. He feels he has failed them, and when they die he travels west to use his singing talent for good. Just by looking at someone he can see there whole life story. Though Mee's travels he sings at many funerals and we learn about their lives. Thoughout this book Mee learns who he really is. Along side the story of Mee there's another story of a girl name mitou who travels east to meet up with Mee. Fate brings them to one another and together they become heartsingers.
 
My favorite thing about the book:
This book is one of the best books I have ever read. There are only two books that I wish I could have written and this is one of them. It's truly beautifully written. With in the story there are other little stories and each little story is amazing. I love mitou's story of how she grew up to ugly words said by her parents and how eventually any noise at all sounds ugly. I love the story of the princess and how she would sit in front of a mirror and look at her self because when she was little her parents would never look at her or pay her any attention. I mean, come on, how does someone come up with stuff like that? It's fantastic. And the way it's written is just incredible. It was translated in to English so I think it being foreign might have to due with the way it sounds. And I love the ending, when Mee runs to meet mitou and sings as he goes. Beautiful. 

Some things I didn't like about the book: The only thing I didn't like was that it was so short. I wish it was longer... oh well :)

Rating: I would give Heartsinger 5 out of five stars. (one of the only two books I would give a five)

Recommend it?: Absolutely yes. It's really unlike anything you have ever read. This is an amazing example of how a book can be good with out all of that teenage drama stuff mixed in.

Book #3: Fallen
Finished: January 17, 2011

Have you ever walked into a book store, looked at a book, and went "Wow that looks stupid, or that looks ready bad"? Well I'm sure you have, and I have too. And one of those books was Fallen by Lauren Kate. When I saw it i didn't give it a second look. But one day I went into my school library and the librarian took my arm and said "I have the perfect book for you". She dragged me over to the new book section and picked up Fallen. The whole time she was checking the book our for me I was thinking 'Noooo, I don't want to read this, it looks so bad', but I knew I had to read it because she would want to hear all about what I thought of it ( I'm one of the only kids who comes in to actually check out books). So I read it. Have you ever heard the saying 'Don't judge a book by it's cover'? There has never been a statement more true.

Fallen Summary: This book is about a 17 year old girl name Luce, who is sent away to this boarding school full of messed up and troubled kids where you have no connection to the outside world except for one phone call a week.  At this school is where she meets Daniel, a boy who clearly wants nothing to do with her but she can't help but feel she already knows him...

My favorite thing about the book: Okay so the truth is... I loved this book. It was fantastic! I loved the setting; the school, graveyard, hidden lake, and angel statutes. I loved Cam, but hated him at the same time. I like the description of his green eyes. But I loved Daniel more, and how he kept slipping up on secrets of the past. I loved the description of Luce and Daniel's kiss. And I just loved the whole idea of the novel; secret pasts and fallen angels. And the ending, it makes you need to read the next book.

Rating: I would give Fallen a 4.6 out of five stars.

Recommend it?: Oh my gosh yes! Read this book now!

Book #2

Book #2: Shiver
Finished: January 13, 2011

So the second book I read this year is one I have been wanting to read for a very long time. The book club I'm in at my school (which only has four kids in it including me) was planing to read shiver by maggie stiefvater some time last year. So I decided I would wait until we all read it together instead of going out and buying it myself and reading it. So I waited and waited and waited... We never read it -.- So finally  I couldn't wait any longer and I read it.

Shiver Summary: There's this girl named Grace who lives in a town on the outskirts of some woods. In those woods live wolves- werewolves. They only become human when it's warm out, like in the summer, and become wolves when it is cold out, like in the winter, and every year they have less and less time to be human. Grace was attacked by the wolves when she was very little, but one wolf, Sam, saved her. Ever since then they have been watching each other and this book tells the story of what happens when Grace meets Sam as a human. This is Sam's last year of being a human and Grace isn't ready to let him go.

My favorite thing about the book: I love Sam's back story about how he became a wolf and what his parents  did to him, and I love how they bring that up at different parts if the book. I could really connect with Grace, with her being a quite girl who loves reading in a town where she doesn't fit in. I loved the ending, slight cliff hanger ;) and I loved the reference to poetry and Sam's life being in song lyrics. Very creative. I'm very excited to read the next two in the series. 

Some things I didn't like about the book: I didn't like how after, what 2?, weeks of Grace knowing Sam as a human they slept together. I mean I know Grace thought she was about to lose him forever but I think maggie stiefvater should have wait until the next book, or book after to have that happen seeing how it is a trilogy. But of course the rules of love are different when you're dealing with one human and one fictional creature. I like Sam's take on what happened and how he thought she did it to get back at here parents. Makes you think a little. Other than that I loved the book.

Rating: I would give shiver a 4.2 out of five stars.

Recommend it?: If you like fantasy love stories than yes :)!

Book #1

As you can see I'm a little behind with starting this blog, but even though I started so late into January I'm still going to include the 4 books I have already read this year. So I thought I would start off with a teenage classic to get the ball rolling.

Book #1: Twilight
Finished: January 9, 2011

The first book I read this year was Twilight by Stephanie Meyer. And no this was not my first time reading this book. It was my ... 5th?

I am a huge fan of the Twilight saga books. The movies- not so much. The
movies do not do the books justice. I think the people they cast were all wrong, the way they changed the plot was wrong, the cullens house was wrong, the school was wrong, everything was wrong. But this blog is not here for my to complain about bad movies, it's here so I can talk about wonderful books. And twilight is a wonderful book.

Twilight Summary: I'm guessing most people know what twilight is about but for those few people who have been living under a rock the last five years... twilight is a novel about a girl named Bella who moves to Forks, Washington and meets the love of her life, Edward. There's only one problem- he's a vampire.

My favorite thing about the book: What's not to like? It has love, secrets, revenge, action, vampires, and on top of all of that Bella tries to figure out who she is and where she belongs. I like how in a lot if ways (besides the vampire love part) I can relate this book and the way Bella feels to my life. Parents divorced, going to a new school, trying to fit in, that kind if thing. Edward and Bella are perfect together. I  love all of the different characters in the book and all of there different personalities. Jasper and Alice are adorable together, and my favorite characters. Hmm.. I think that's all of my favorite things from the book. I don't have a ton to say for this book because in guessing everyone knows it. Over all it is a great read that will make you not want to put it down. And if you don't feel like reading it YouTube Alex Day reads Twilight. Team Edward or Team Jacob? : I known right now that's the only thing you really want to know ;). And the truth is I am proudly Team Edward. So sorry all you Tayl- I mean Jacob fans, but Jacob is an annoying, clumsy, huge, long haired dog boy and I see nothing attractive in that. Edward on the other hand...

Rating: I would give twilight a 4.6. out of five stars.

Recommend it?: definitely. But of course I'm sure most people have read it.
